Grosse Ile is a general law township of Wayne County, MI, situated on 12 islands in the Detroit River. Boating on the Detroit River

As a network of islands, boating has been a key means of transportation and recreation for Grosse Ile residents from its early history. Today, many Grosse Ile homes feature boat launches and docks for its residents to enjoy living on the water. Grosse Ile is also considered one of the best Detroit River locations to observe the local boat traffic. Lake freighters and oceangoing ships use the river to travel to destinations around the Great Lakes, and regularly pass near the east side of the island.

The Grosse Ile Lighthouse was originally built in 1894, and has since become a symbol of the town. The lighthouse's management and preservation is currently overseen by the Grosse Ile Historical Society, which holds an annual tour of the lighthouse each fall.

Grosse Ile's largest annual community event is Islandfest, which is held over a weekend each June and features rides, food, and live music. The Grosse Ile Youth Recreational Association also coordinates an annual charity run and Halloween haunted house, along with summer youth sporting events.

Conservation is a key value of Grosse Ile's residents. Many belong to the Grosse Ile Land and Nature Conservancy, which owns and maintains several of the islands' environmentally important woodland and wetland areas.
